We Are Our Brother's Keeper

September 24th marks the culmination of months of fundraising events in our various communities. Whether it is the Fish Fry in D.C., The Tobago Day in N.Y, Tea Party in Tobago or Family Day/Walk in Fort Lauderdale, it all comes to a fruitful end at Store Bay, Tobago.

This year was extra special for me. It was my first time experiencing the AIDS Awareness Walk in Tobago. It was extremely moving to see my people, 1000+ strong in a "sea of red" making a stand through the villages from Bacolet to Store Bay: young and old alike, all committed to completing the task; striding forward to stay ahead of this dreadful dis-ease.

Additionally, this year it is pleasing to report an increase in the number of participants at Saturday's HIV/AIDS Symposium. In addition to the afflicted, their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters all came in support of their loved ones for counselling, encouragement and a day of sharing.

When I hear that the first Walk had a handful of participants and, this year's Walk over one thousand, it is obvious that the message is reaching the people. Yet, the work must be continued if we are to eradicate HIV/AIDS out of Tobago. Remember, we are our brothers' keeper and we must encourage ourselves as we should each other, to practice safe sex, get tested, stay on medication, eat healthy, exercise and most of all maintain a spiritual consciousness.

Stay strong, forever young and see you all next year 2000+ strong!
